The 5-Pillars of Deeply Nourishing Self-Care

We're doing self-care all wrong. Much of the prevalent "self-care" culture focuses on temporarily soothing painful emotions or experiences, often failing to address the deeper need. Instead, we need tools that both relieve some of the stress of the moment AND deeply heal our minds and bodies for the long run. Here are 5 pillars of self-care to be addressed for a holistic and well-rounded self-care regime.

Developmental Self-Care

Developmental self-care focuses on personal growth, learning, and achieving one's potential. It involves activities that stimulate the mind and contribute to skill development.


Examples:

  • Reading books or articles to gain knowledge.
  • Taking up a new hobby or skill, such as painting or playing a musical instrument.
  • Setting and working towards personal or professional goals.

Soothing Self-Care

Soothing self-care involves activities that promote relaxation, stress reduction, and emotional well-being. It aims to provide comfort and relief from daily pressures.


Examples:

  • Practicing mindfulness meditation or deep breathing exercises.
  • Taking warm baths or practicing aromatherapy.
  • Engaging in activities that bring joy and calm, such as listening to music or spending time in nature.

Nourishing Self-Care

Nourishing self-care focuses on physical well-being, including proper nutrition, exercise, and adequate rest. It emphasizes taking care of the body to support overall health.


Examples:

  • Eating a balanced and nutritious diet.
  • Regular physical exercise, such as walking, jogging, or yoga.
  • Ensuring sufficient and quality sleep.

Social Self-Care

Social self-care involves nurturing and maintaining healthy relationships with others. It emphasizes the importance of social connections for emotional and mental well-being.


Examples:

  • Spending quality time with friends and family.
  • Joining clubs or groups with shared interests.
  • Practicing effective communication and setting boundaries in relationships.

Spiritual Self-Care

Spiritual self-care is about finding meaning, purpose, and connection to something larger than oneself. It doesn't necessarily relate to organized religion but focuses on personal beliefs and values.


Examples:

  • Engaging in meditation or prayer.
  • Reflecting on personal values and beliefs.
  • Connecting with nature or engaging in activities that bring a sense of purpose.

Balancing these pillars and incorporating activities from each category into your routine can contribute to a holistic and comprehensive self-care practice.
